I started working out at CrossFit Elkhorn in the Spring of 2014. I joined initially just to so spend time with my wife; more of a whim than anything. I had serious doubts about it and figured it would just intensify my permanent nerve issues–I was wrong. Not only did I start to enjoy the workouts and the sense of community that CrossFit Elkhorn facilitated. I also noticed the pains associated with my nerve condition started to dissipate.

I was diagnosed with schwanomatosis back in 2009 … that’s the term for growth of benign tumors on nerves. I’ve got 8 total–cranial, neck, 2 spinal, leg, bicep, forearm, and abdomen. It’s a pretty rare disease that causes pain to whichever area the nerve is associated with and brings about many sleepless nights.

For me, it was one of those things in life (aged 35 when initially diagnosed) that made me think to myself, “o.k., I’m getting old now, and I guess it’s just time to slow down and avoid the high impact things that I’ve enjoyed all my life”. I did exactly that and everything became worse. The pain in my legs and feet worsened with every month; I was taking two over-the-counter meds to cope during the day and to sleep at night.

Now eight months later, I’ve gone from two workouts a week to unlimited activity, I’m off the medication and the pain has reduced dramatically–and I’m sleeping better at night. I never imagined the CrossFit Elkhorn regimen would have had this impact on my quality of life. I’m a much better person, husband and father to be around–all thanks to my new non-synthetic prescription medication…CFE!
